Australia has a range of environmental issues and challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, waste management and pollution. According to the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which ranks 180 countries on 32 indicators of environmental health and ecosystem vitality, Australia ranked 13th in the world in 2020, with a score of 74.9 out of 100. This is an improvement from its rank of 21st in 2018, but still below some of its peers like Norway, Germany and Japan.
Some of the areas where Australia performed well in the EPI were air quality, sanitation and drinking water, biodiversity and habitat, and water resources. Some of the areas where Australia performed poorly were waste management, ecosystem services, fisheries and greenhouse gas emissions.
